Roger Goldingay ('73)

Dear Jane,

Your response has been posted to the web site. I believe your conversion of the Voices of '71 to a "promotional" college publication is inappropriate. A close read of José Gómez's comments may prove enlightening.

I agree with Jose when he says, "The College now has the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to free speech. It is a rare opportunity to demonstrate the courage which this important freedom deserves."

Steve Park deserves an apology for the way he and his work have been treated by the school. The Alumni deserve to have the original "Voices of '71" distributed. Stamp a disclaimer in the front of the cover if necessary. Devote a week on campus to Free Speech and another week to Racism. And I will again become a faithful supporter of Evergreen - as will many others who have been disappointed by the College's actions. You might even sell a lot of books.

You made the hard decision initially, and you have the opportunity to make another one. If you do this, I will make sure that you - and more importantly, Evergreen - get full credit on the web site and I will e-mail an announcement to the Evergreen List I have accumulated. Then we can join together to celebrate an institution that is responsive, concerned and enlightened.

Sincerely,

Roger Goldingay, Class of '73, E:mail: roger@rgimages.com
